In practice the aim is to improve training and education by sharing the responsibility of courses. Instead of all the Nordic nations providing all equal courses, each nation provide training within a specific subject area. For instance, all UNMOC (Military Observer) Courses are performed at FINCENT in Finland and all MILPOC (Military Police Officer) Courses are conducted at the Army Logistics School in Denmark and so forth.
To administer and coordinate training, Course Directors from the Nordic nations international training centres (Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark) constitute a permanent working group within NORDEFCO. The Course Directors meet on a regular basis and the chairmanship is rotated between the nations. Norway is currently (2010) chairing the Working Group Course Directors.
The Nordic international training centres (or equivalent) conduct Nordic courses in order to educate Nordic officers of all ranks to serve in all types of Peace Support Operations however which International Security Organisation that might be lead(e.g. NATO, UN, OSCE). Some of the courses also address police and other personnel from civilian and governmental organisations in order to train multifunctionality within a multinational environment. A number of seats on all nordic courses are also available to students from non-Nordic countries.
From 2006 until 2010, the Nordic Nations engaged NORDCAPS in order to provide PSO Training Support to third nations/regions as an activity within Security Sector Reform (SSR) (e.g. to the Western Balkan Region and Ukraine).
